There are so many awful things happening in the world around us today. Tragedies from mass shootings, to accidents that have hurt little children, to crocked politicians, and even violations of certain rights. It seems like you can not pick up a paper or social media without reading about some kind of tragedy or another. This saddens me.
But what saddens me even more is the way people react to these tragedies. It seems like the first reaction is to place blame. We as a society have become focused on holding someone responsible that we can not see that it may have been an accident. Yes, bad things are going to happen, and yes it sucks. But blaming someone that is not at fault does not fix it or make it go away. It does not make it easier to deal with. It only creates another problem. A problem that becomes bigger then the original situation.
Another problem is how sensative we as a society have become. We allow ourselves to be offened by everything. We then in turn try to voice our opinons so strongly that we ultimately lose sight of what offened us in the first place. We have allowed ourselves to be so effected by things that we "jump off the deep end" as soon as someone doesnt agree with us. There is an amendment that allows us the right to free speech. But does this mean we must speak of everything? It seems like we as a society have decided to speak about everything even if we are uneducated about the topic.
In high school we are taught how to debate. There are three basic parts involved in a succesful debate. Topic, research, rebuttal. All too often in a 'life debate' we as a society forget the middle part, research. I agree that we should be able to speak our minds, its what sets us apart as individuals. But please dont step to me and start a debate if you have not first researched your opinon.
Growing up in a Christian household we were taught to be kind and love our neighbor as though they were our brother or sister. We put others and their feelings above our own. Maybe this is where society has faultered. We are so concerned with taking religion out of everything, that we have taken it out of our actions as well. What if we brought him back? What if we treated others the we wanted to be treated? What if we started to say "I love you" or "I forgive you" instead of "its your fault" or "youre an idiot if you believe that"? What if we stopped being mean and started being nice?
Would any of that change whats wrong with today? Lets try and find out.
Very well written. I can totally relate to your point of view!
